FAQ
1. I don’t know if I can do this ....?
There is often anxiety around seeking help from a professional: it is common to feel embarrassed in admitting that we can’t cope on our own (as adults aren’t we ‘expected’ to?); fear of stigma by our loved ones or friends or colleagues; anxiety about the process of opening up to a stranger, revealing very personal thoughts and feelings; anxiety about whether the therapist will accept us for who we are without making judgments; and so on. However, taking that first difficult step will hopefully be the start of a challenging but rewarding journey towards your well being! Back to top
2. What is the policy on confidentiality?
As a member of BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) I am bound to its Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and subject to its Professional Conduct Procedure.
You can expect me to maintain confidentiality about you and what we discuss together; such confidentiality however does not extend to circumstances known to me of significant risk of harm to you or to others, or a child protection issue.
Also, every counsellor/therapist is subject to regular supervision from a senior professional Supervisor, with the aim of ensuring the competence and ethical quality of the counselling that is provided. During such supervision issues related to clients do come up; however identifying details are not disclosed. Back to top
3. How long does counselling last?
As each person is unique and presents different circumstances, this is something that is discussed together and mutually agreed. It will rarely last less than four sessions, and in general it will be between 12 and 24 sessions long. In some cases an unlimited number of sessions is preferred and more suitable to a client. 4. What about the fee and other arrangements?
Sessions last 55 minutes and the fee of £45 is payable at the end of each session (cheque or cash). For trainee counsellors there is a reduced fee. If a session has to be cancelled 24 hours notice is required, otherwise the normal fee is still payable. If at all possible that session may be rescheduled within that week at no extra cost, but there is no guarantee that it will be rescheduled. To avoid disruption to the counselling process, it is advised that you give as much notice as possible of any holidays. Back to top
